Photo Engraving on Wood and Acrylic: Which Photos Work

Contrast, resolution and why the photo you send matters more than the machine that engraves it.

Photo Engraving on Wood and Acrylic: Which Photos Work

Photo engraving on wood in Cameroon works by burning a greyscale version of your photograph into the surface. There is no ink and no colour. The laser darkens the wood where the picture is dark and leaves it alone where the picture is light. On acrylic the same idea runs in reverse: engraving frosts the surface white, so a photograph comes out bright on a dark or clear background. Whether the result looks like your person or like a smudge depends almost entirely on the photo you send, not on the machine.

The one rule

Contrast decides everything. The laser can only make a surface darker or frosted. It cannot add light that was never in the photograph. If your subject and the background behind them are the same brightness, the engraving loses the edge between them and the head merges into the wall.

This is not about skin tone. It is about separation. A dark suit against a dark curtain fails. A light dress against a white wall fails just as badly. What we need is a subject that clearly stands apart from whatever is behind them.

WhatsApp is the biggest single problem

Nearly every photo we receive arrives through WhatsApp, and WhatsApp compresses images heavily by default. The picture looks fine on a phone screen. Engraved at 30 or 50 cm it shows blocky edges and mush where the detail used to be.

There are two fixes and both are easy. Send the photo as a document rather than as an image, which keeps the original file. Or send it by email. Either way, take it from the phone gallery, not from a chat where it has already been forwarded three times. Every forward strips more detail out.

Resolution, in plain terms

Forget the numbers. Do this instead: open the photo on a phone and zoom in until the head fills the screen. If it still looks sharp at that zoom, we can engrave it well. If it goes soft and blocky, so will the engraving, only larger and permanent.

A photo that is fine for a small desk award may not be fine for a 50 cm plaque, because the same file is being stretched across four times the area. Tell us the size you want before you choose the photo, and we will tell you honestly whether the file will carry it.

For portraits, wood usually wins. The burned tones behave like a photograph in a way frosted acrylic does not, and the grain adds something. For logos and line artwork, acrylic wins. If the piece is going outdoors, wood is out entirely for the reasons set out in acrylic, PVC or wood.

Sizes and prices

  • Small plaque or desk award: 40 000 XAF
  • Round indoor acrylic plaque, 50 cm: 60 000 XAF
  • Round indoor acrylic plaque, larger: 60 000 - 80 000 XAF
  • Other shapes, sizes and materials: quote in 24 hours

We cut up to 1 m by 0.9 m in one piece. Larger pieces are cut in sections designed to join, though for a portrait we would normally talk you into staying within a single sheet rather than running a seam through an image.

The jobs people actually bring us

Four kinds of photo engraving come through the workshop more than any other, and each has its own trap.

Memorial plaques

The most common, and the most careful work we do. The trap is that the only photograph the family has is old, printed, and already faded. Do not photograph it with a phone at an angle under a ceiling light. Get it scanned flat at the highest setting the machine offers, at a printing shop if you do not have a scanner. A good scan of an old print engraves far better than a phone snap of the same print.

Retirement and long service gifts

Usually a staff photograph from an office file, which is often a small crop from a group shot. Ask the office for the original before you accept the crop. Wood suits these pieces, and a short line of text under the portrait does more than a paragraph.

Wedding and anniversary gifts

Couples send the photographer's edited images, which are normally excellent files. The trap here is the opposite one: heavy editing with a soft glow or a strong filter removes the very detail the laser needs. Ask the photographer for a clean version.

Company and school crests with a photograph

A building, a campus, a first premises. These engrave well when the sky is not blown out to pure white and the building is not in deep shade. A photograph taken in the early morning or late afternoon, not at midday, gives the separation we need.

What we do before we burn

Every photo gets prepared. We convert it to greyscale, adjust the contrast so the subject separates from the background, and sometimes lift the background out entirely. Then we send you a proof showing roughly how it will come out, in the actual proportions of the plaque.

Look at that proof properly. It is your last chance. Once the laser has run, the material is used. If the proof looks wrong to you, say so, and send a different photo if you have one. We would far rather restart at the proof stage than hand over a memorial plaque that does not look like the person.

What to send

  1. The original photo file, as a document or by email, straight from the gallery.
  2. The size you want, in centimetres.
  3. Wood or acrylic, or ask us and we will recommend.
  4. Any text that goes with it, typed, spelled exactly as you want it engraved.
  5. The town it is going to, if it is not Bamenda.

MTN MoMo and Orange Money for payment, deposit to start, balance after you have seen photographs. Transport agency delivery to Bafoussam, Douala, Yaounde and elsewhere.

Examples of engraved portraits and logos are in the gallery. If the piece is an award, the material comparison is in crystal, acrylic or wood, and ceremony wording is in graduation award plaques in Cameroon.

Send the photo on WhatsApp, as a document rather than an image, and we will tell you honestly whether it will engrave well before you pay anything. Everything we make is listed on the services page.

Questions people ask

What kind of photo engraves best on wood?

One face filling the frame, evenly lit, against a plain background that is clearly lighter or darker than the subject. A studio or passport photograph is close to ideal. Separation between subject and background matters more than anything else.

Why does my WhatsApp photo come out blurry when engraved?

WhatsApp compresses images by default, and every forward strips more detail. Send the photo as a document instead of as an image, taken from your phone gallery rather than from a chat, or send it by email.

Can you engrave a group photograph?

Rarely well at plaque size. Six faces on a 50 cm plaque become six small patches. Either crop to one or two people, or accept that the result is a scene rather than a portrait.

Does engraving come out in colour?

No. Engraving has no ink. On wood the mark is burned brown, on clear acrylic it is frosted white. Every photograph becomes greyscale, which is why contrast in the original is so important.

What does a photo plaque cost?

A small plaque or desk award is 40 000 XAF. A round indoor acrylic plaque at 50 cm is 60 000 XAF, and larger sizes are 60 000 to 80 000 XAF. Other shapes and materials are quoted in 24 hours.

Will you tell me if my photo is not good enough?

Yes, before you pay anything. We also send a greyscale proof in the proportions of the finished plaque before the laser runs. If it does not look like the person to you, we stop and try another photo.

Tell us what you need.

A photo, a sketch, a file, or a sentence. We reply within 24 hours.
